As a unit leader, your responsibilities at WINGS are the same as they would be on any unit camp or residential experience. Leaders remain responsible for their young people at all times and play a vital role in ensuring everyone has a safe, enjoyable and memorable week.
To support this:
- Leaders must ensure that young people know who to go to and where to find them at all times
- During the evenings, at least one leader (where possible), should remain in the subcamp so there is always a clear point of contact for participants. These leaders should also not be under the influence of alcohol.
Supporting a safe and positive environment
All leaders, whether from Scouting or Girlguiding, are expected to follow their organisation’s, and WINGS’s policies and guidance throughout the event.
For those within Scouting, this includes adherence to the Green Card policy, particularly around expectations relating to alcohol and behaviour.
Supporting the wider event
WINGS is delivered by a huge team of dedicated volunteers, working together to create an incredible experience for every participant.
As part of this shared effort:
- There may be times when leaders are asked to support activities or assist with operational duties
- This could include helping in activity areas, supporting programme delivery, or assisting with general tasks across the site
We ask all leaders to approach these requests positively and supportively, helping to ensure the event runs smoothly for everyone. Requests for support will typically be requested the night before at the subcamp meetings or may be broadcast out by the WINGS team.
Leading the WINGS spirit
Leaders play a key role in setting the tone for the week; modelling positive behaviour, encouraging participation and helping young people get the most from their WINGS experience.By working together, supporting one another, and embracing the spirit of the jamboree, we can create something truly special for every participant.
Working together
If something isn’t quite right during the event, we encourage you to raise it directly with us, through your subcamp team, the information desk or other event volunteers, so we can help resolve it quickly.
We’re here to support you and early conversations help us keep WINGS running smoothly for everyone.
